According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports there was a surge in tourist arrivals during January and February this year racing past the 7 million visitors mark.
A press conference was held where official statistics were released to the public by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports Panupong Sawetarun announced that a total of 7.1 million foreign tourists flocked to the kingdom over the past two months.
February resulted in numbers swelling to 3.5 million visitors that month alone largely attributed to Chinses New Year celebrations which resulted in 1.2 million Chinese tourists visiting the kingdom.
Other large groups of tourists included visitors from Russian, Malaysia, Korea, France, Germany and the United States.
Total revenue generated from tourism in February grew by 23.78 percent where a total amount of 190 billion baht was generated.
Revenue generated since the start of 2018 increased by 17.47 percent compared to the same period in 2017 to a total of 380 billion baht.
During the press conference it was stated that the governments promotion of “secondary tourist destinations” is also resulting in increased numbers of visitors traveling to less common areas of the kingdom, areas of note which are experiencing increased number of visitors include Buriram, Nakhon Nayok and Loei.
