Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival officially opened yesterday with a traditional “pole-raising”
ceremony in an act believed to signal the decent of the Nine Emperor Gods from the heavens which traditionally marks the beginning of the festival.
Taoist vegetarian festivals will be carried out across Thailand, however due to Phuket’s large Thai-Chinese community they hold the biggest festival.
The Governor of Phuket Norraphat Plodthong was present at a ceremony at the Jui Tui shrine in Phuket town at 5.09pm yesterday.
From 5pm until 6pm is considered to be an extra lucky period of the day in Thailand.
There was also a large number of Ma Song (spirit mediums) in attendance who whilst supposedly possessed by spirits pierce their own skin to prove they really are possessed as they feel no pain.
The festival will run until October 28.
For all taking part in the festival they are supposed to not eat meat, have sex or drink alcohol during the nine day event.
What do you think could you go nine days abiding by the festivals conditions?
