Officials in Phuket have got the DNA results back for Laypang, who grabbed media headlines before being captured when it was pictured on camera swimming off the coast in Phuket last month.
Phuket’s governor told reporters that the Fisheries Department will now take over the next phase of the Laypang saga.
Authorities are currently searching possible locations where the large croc could have originated from as DNA results confirmed that it was a cross breed between salt and freshwater crocodile which could have only originated in captivity.
Specialists have been brought in to suggest the best way to transport the three-metre-long reptile, they also recommended that Laypang not be released back into the wild.
One specialist in attendance said that the incident has raised awareness of saltwater crocodiles here in Thailand and can help to promote and create a proper breeding ground for the reptiles.
