A 100-kilometre police chase resulted in the driver losing his life and two passengers being injured after the car attempting to evade the police crashed into a bridge in the Ubon Ratchathani province
Officers said the crash happened at roughly 1:30am at the Huay Bung Kone Bridge in Tambon Kham Pom.
The crash was severe enough to propel the driver Panay Khaowong, 25, through the windshield of the car where he landed on the pavement of the bridge and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Attthapol Putthakun, 25, and Patcharaporn Sripradit, 23 were also in the car and were injured.
Patcharaporn told officers that the two men had picked her up from a restaurant where she worked and they were on route to an entertainment venue.
She said they came to a police check point where the driver, Panay, wouldn’t take a breath test and he drove off with the police pursuing them until they crashed.
The officer pursuing them said that he chased them for about 100 kilometres across five districts.
Sgt-Major Suriya Khunthong said that he could smell alcohol on the man’s breath and instructed him to pull over to the roadside to take a breath test before he tried to flee.
He said he was roughly 500 metres behind the car when it crashed into the bridge.
