Police will start monitoring Thai social media and reprimand celebrities who post messages, picture or videos encouraging people to drink alcohol.
A video conference was held with high-ranking government officials to discuss the new measures.
There will be strict fines imposed ranging from 50,000 baht for first time offenses up to 200,000 baht for more severe cases.
National police chief advisor, Pol General Weerachai Songmetta said that five celebrities from Nonthaburi who have been caught posing with alcohol are currently being investigated.
He said he is aware that many others are probably doing the same and warned they should remove all the posts from their social media before they are gathered as evidence and action is taken.
He explained that these measures are being put back in place as online media is increasingly being used to promote drinking alcohol.
Section 32 of the Alcohol Beverage Control Act prohibits anyone from advertising and from showing the names and logos of brands to promote them.
Dr Nipon Chinanonwet from the office of Alcohol Control Committee said a recent study found that 30% of people started drinking after seeing images of their favourite celebrity posing with alcohol.
It seems that the government is getting stricter and stricter about what gets posted on social media.
