In an increasing effort to improve road safety across the kingdom the deputy head of the National Police stated that an additional 200,000 officials are being mobilized in preparation for the increased number of people using roads across the kingdom over the New Year’s period.
The 200,000 additional personnel will comprise of 90,000 police officer as well as volunteers from various agencies.
Wirachai Songmetta stated that they are planning to set up 2,000 “help points” after flagging 2,800 roads that will require special attention during the festive period as they represent the greatest risk.
He elaborated that officials would be strictly upholding the law with personnel equipped with speed detection equipment and breathe test kits to identify drink drivers.
Wirachai said that over the last three years the average number of accidents over the New Year period was 490 per day with 57 fatalities and over 500 injuries.
It is also planned that all current road works will stop on December 29 to try and improve traffic flow across the kingdom.
