The Excise Department has announced that they are currently preparing a proposal to present to the cabinet to increase the taxes on soft drinks that have a high sugar content
Somchai Poolsavasdi the Director-General of the Excise Department said on August 24 that his department was finalising a proposed amendment to Article 29 which covers laws relating to the tax of soft drinks, sugar-added green tea and energy drinks.
The new proposal would see drinks taxed in relation to their sugar content which has never happened in Thailand before this.
If the proposal gets approved drinks that exceed the maximum permissible sugar content will be taxed at a higher rate, currently drinks are taxed at 20% of their value.
The department has reportedly devised six tax bands.
