A new law has been proposed by members of a top Thai university which could mark a true change for the nation’s transgender population
The Gender Certification Act, if it gets the go ahead from relevant authorities, would allow transgender citizens to legally change their gender on all documentation.
The proposal comes from the result of research carried out by Thammasat University looking at a variety of factors such as public sentiment and societal norms as well as how successful similar laws have been in other countries including America and the UK.
The proposal also looks to address several vague areas in the Thai Gender Equality Act of 2015.
Under current law no matter how a person looks they have to identify themselves on legal documents by their birth gender, which can make them vulnerable to prejudice and discrimination.
