In an announcement made today a police deputy spokesman outlined new rules that have come into effect once of which being those driving with red licence plates could face a fine of up to 10,000 baht.
He said drivers who do not acquire proper licence plates and pay their vehicle taxes within 60 days of becoming the car’s owner will face a fine according to the new rules.
He elaborated that the Land Transport Department can complete the process to make the car legal in one day.
The deadline to comply with the new rules will get even shorter come January when the period will reduce from 60 days to 30.
According to Thai law red licence plates are for temporary use for sale or maintenance of vehicles.
