Some fairly major repair work has begun today at Krabi International Airport to fix several damaged spots on the airports runway with work expected to take up to a week to complete.
Though the work will be carried out over the next 7 days only 5-6 international flights are expected to be affected all of which have already been notified.
According to the airport’s director Attaporn Nuang-Udom the parts of the runway which require repair are the points where aircraft make U-turns before and after takeoff and landing.
Cracks in the runway at these points have been caused as a result of skidding tires as planes turn, it is estimated that the points are subject to the stress from such actions up to 100 times per day due to the high volume of both domestic and international flights flying in and out of the airport.
There are two areas at either end of the airport’s main runway which require repair to fix 5-meter-long cracks as well as minor surface damage to the runway.
At the same time as the repair works are being carried out the whole 3,000 meter main runway will also undergo general maintenance which is not expected to affect additional flights.
Are you flying out of Krabi International this week? Let us know if the work caused any problem for your trip in the comments section below.
