Seven deadly days of new year- 90 percent of court cases were drink drivers

It seems officials efforts to reduce the number of drink drivers on Thai roads over the new year’s period fell on deaf ears as according to figures released by the director general of the Department of Probation there were more drink drivers caught this year than ever before during officials seven deadly days of new year campaign.

Director general Prasan Mahaleetrakun stated that there was a total of 3,841 serious accidents which resulted in 423 deaths over the seven day period.

A total of 6,677 cases were brought before a judge in the courtroom of which 6,030 cases involved drink driving.

Of the remaining roughly 10 percent most involved cases of drivers high on drugs whilst behind the wheel.

The three worst areas for offenders caught were Surin with 448 cases, Bangkok with 354 cases and Mahasarakham with 269.

It was also stated that of the number caught for drink driving 99 were repeat offenders who had been charged for drink driving previously.
