BANGKOK, 26th July 2018 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has affirmed Thailand will provide assistance and help the people of Lao PDR overcome the disaster set off by the collapse of the Xepian-Xe Namnoy Dam in the country’s Attapeu province.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha engaged in a phone conversation with his Laotian counterpart Thongloun Sisoulith before a ceremony in which Thailand provided 5 million baht in aid to the Lao PDR Embassy in Thailand.

The PM offered words of encouragement to the people of Lao and prayed for a quick resolution to their plight. He has ordered the Royal Thai Army and other agencies to provide urgent assistance and urged all sectors to donate money and necessities to the neighboring nation.

On top of the funds donated by the government, the Thai Embassy in Vientiane assembled 1.3 million baht and 26 billion Lao Kip from Thai businesses and citizens in Lao PDR for the relief effort. The Thai Consul General in Savannakhet similarly amassed cash and necessities worth over 100,000 Baht for Attapeu.

Gen Prayut relayed to the Thai community that the Laotian government is in need on temporary tents, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, drinking water, clothing, medication and portable lavatories to aid those displaced by the disaster.
