Thailand’s home and office numbers will change from nine to 10 digits as part of a major change which will take place over the next three years.
At a meeting between the National Digital Economy and Society committee chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha on September 6, it was approved that the numbers be changed to ten digits.
Once the changes come into effect numbers that begin 02, 03, 05, and 07 will then have a number 1 added after the number 0.
Pichet Durongkaveroj, Minister of Digital Economy and Society explained that by changing home and office numbers to the 10 digit system it would increase the amount of mobile numbers in Thailand to 760 million numbers instead of the current amount of 52.5 million.
He also explained that the change would double the amount of landline numbers from the current 50 million to 100 million.
Thailand will now need to give the International Telecommunications Union two years notice about the intended changes.
