Police in the southern province of Phang Nga rescued two Russian nationals who went into the jungle to visit the famous Sa Nang Manora waterfall by asking the tourists to send their location via WhatsApp.
At about 9pm last night, the police and Nop Pring district officials successfully discovered Daniil Rabokov, 29, and his girlfriend Ksenia Kolosnikova, 28, near the waterfall — four hours after they received a call from the couple, Sanook reported.
The pair said that earlier that day, they rode a motorbike from Phuket, then trekked to the waterfall, but after sunset, they couldn’t find their way out, prompting the call to police.
While talking with the police, their phone was running out of credit, so officials topped up their phone with THB300 (US$10) credit and asked them to send their location via WhatsApp.
After walking into the jungle for about two kilometers, authorities found the couple, who were uninjured but clearly in distress.
The tourists thanked the authorities for helping them out and said they will travel in Phang Nga for more two days.
And that, is how WhatsApp saved Christmas.
