The head of Thailand’s Tourist Police division led a large scale raid on an illegal call centre operation at a condominium complex in northern Bangkok yesterday (November 13.)
It was reported however it was as much a raid targeting those who had overstayed their visas as it was at catching those involved with the illegal call centre.
The raid was led by Surachet Hakpan organising officers from 191 special branch and immigration police who descended upon the Ban Suan Thon condo in Ratanathibet.
Six Taiwanese men and two Chinese women were arrested for running the call centre scam from rooms on both the first and second floors of the condo.
All eight were found to not have passports claiming that they were currently in the process of extending their visas. Officers took into evidence both video and communications equipment.
Surachet said following the operation that it was a result of a ministerial order to crack down on an estimated 200,000 people currently in Thailand having over-stayed their visas, however in this case those who had overstayed were also involved in a serious crime.
He went on to elaborate that his officers were currently acting upon 89 warrants for people that are known to have overstayed their visas.
