A new record was set for the most tourists visiting Thailand during a low season month in August after 3.13 million tourists flocked to Thailand.
Tourism accounts for 12 percent of Thailand’s economy which continues to thrive.
Arrivals in August were up by 8.66 percent compared to August in 2016 and it was the first time that visitors during that month surpassed 3 million.
Pongpanu Svetarundra, permanent secretary of tourism and sport spoke at a news conference on Tuesday announcing that tourists who visited Thailand in August generated 163 billion baht in revenue which was an 11.7 percent increase from 2016.
He noted that the August numbers were high considering it is low season.
He went on to state that visitors from East Asia were up by 10 percent from 2016 where a total of 2.26 million tourists arrived this year, nearly 1 million of which travelled from China.
There was also an increase in tourists from the Middle East whose numbers rose by 19.4 percent to a total of 103,784.
