Tourist safety was the number one item on the agenda at a meeting held by the head of the Digital Economy and Society Ministry Dr Pichet Durongkaveroj in Phuket on March 16.
A string of technology-focused projects with the goal of improving tourist safety were discussed at the meeting which took place at the Phuket Provincial Office of the Department of Disaster Mitigation and Prevention where officials laid out plans and projects intended to develop Phuket City into a “Smart City.”
Earmarked as important was the use of CCTV to help authorities catch criminals in and around the city.
Dr Pichet stated the importance of having as much of the area covered by CCTV as possible.
He also toured the CCTV Command Centre at the DDPM Phuket offices where officials exhibited the city’s 37 cameras which have license-plate recognition capabilities which have been installed at intersections around the city.
Other projects raised at the meeting included improved IT support for officials to create and maintain up-to-date date databases for public information, transport and other key items among other projects.
Speaking with Dr Pichet Phuket’s deputy governor Thawornwat Kongkaew said that the Governor of Phuket is keen to push ahead with projects to help transform Phuket into a “smart city” as part of the governments overall Thailand 4.0 initiative.
He said by implementing the projects aimed at further boosting the safety of tourists in the region it will improve tourist confidence and encourage more people to travel to the area.
