Two trains collided at Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok on Saturday morning, resulting in a derailment, which has sparked an investigation by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT).
Both trains were empty at the time and thus there were no injuries reported.
An image showing the two trains merging from two tracks at a switch point, went viral, causing some embarrassment for the operators.
Thanongsak Pongprasert, Deputy Governor for SRT confirmed there was an incident that occurred at 06:45. One train was running between Bangkok and Chachoengsao and the other was working the Bangkok to Nong Khai route. He said one was heading to pick up its first load of passengers, whilst the other had just unloaded its commuters when the pair met.
It appears to have been a switching mechanism fault, as one of the trains should have been stopped to allow the other one through.
Both trains were hardly moving at the time, and brushed together rather than crashing into each other.
