Two Vietnamese passengers were arrested yesterday at Suvarnbhumi airport after custom officials found 74.8kg of elephant tusks split between two bags.
The men quickly denied all knowledge of their illegal cargo saying they had no idea what they were transporting.
The two men identified as Dinh Wan Hon and Ngern Tuan Da were taken directly from the airport to a Court in SamutPrakarn then incarcerated.
The couriers were traveling from Ethiopia to LuangPrabang in Laos before custom officials nabbed them.
The perpetrators alleged they were hired to transport the bags by a man from Angola and did not know what the bags contained.
The ivory trade was outlawed in 1989 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
Officials estimated the confiscated ivory to be worth over 90 million baht!
