Two Nigerian men were arrested by Nong khai immigration officers yesterday (October 16) after they were found to be using fake passports.
Wayne Junior Shinbambo, 35, and Katego Ofentse Makabane, 35, were both arrested when they attempted to travel to Laos via the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge. They allegedly told arresting officers that they were on route to the South African Embassy in Vientiane.
When officers checked their documentation they found numerous discrepancies.
During interrogation the pair admitted to using fake South African passports and admitted that they actually came from Nigeria.
One suspect said that he arrived via Phuket airport while the other said he arrived at Padang Besar. They said they had a friend here in Thailand make them fake passports as both of their genuine ones had expired.
The arrest of the pair comes several days after a massive joint operation from Tourist police, immigration officials and soldiers rounded up over 50 foreigners in raids in Bangkok and Samut Prakan.
Of those arrested the majority detained were from African nations arrested on several offenses including fraud, drugs charges and overstaying visas.
