Two Bangkok women miraculously survived after a massive steel pipe at a construction site slipped from a crane and crushed the front of their Mercedes Wednesday evening.
The terrifying incident, which was captured on video, happened on Bang Khun Non Road, where a flyover is being built.
The driver, 33-year-old Natthajira Chanthanikiree — who you can see was clearly shaken by the incident — told reporters from Thai-language outlet the Daily News that she saw the crane was “shaking terribly” as it was lifting the giant pipe above her head, but had no way to move her car.
Since the construction blocked the road, allowing just one lane for traffic, there was nowhere for Natthajira to escape.
That’s when her worst fears came true — the pipe, weighing 4 tons, fell directly onto the front of her car. While it landed far enough to the front that the front-seat area wasn’t affected, her passenger, Panadda Akkaradamrongdej, 35, received minor injuries because she was hit by the deploying airbag.
Bang Khun Non police yesterday yesterday that the contractor, SRT Supplies Co. Ltd., has agreed to take responsibility for the damage, and will buy a new Mercedes for Natthajira. She can also pick a newer model if she wants. (Editor’s Note: Smart move, guys.)
They said they’ll also compensate Panadda for her injuries. Police, meanwhile, are planning to charge the company with negligence after Panadda has recovered from her injuries and can give her statement.
Meanwhile, construction has been put on hold, as an investigation into the accident is ongoing, Bright TV reported.
After her lucky escape from death, Natthajira said she plans to visit different temples to pray and relieve her anxiety.
She added that she’s not sure whether she’ll accept the compensation in the form of cash or a new car, and would consult with her family first.
