The largest US military force in recent years took part in an annual military exercise here in Thailand today.
In recent years the United States had reduced its number of military personnel taking part in the Cobra Gold military exercises which is Asia’s largest international military exercise following the 2014 coup after the Junta took control of Thailand, however relations between the Junta and United States have improved since Donal Trump became the President of the United States.
This year 6,800 U.S military personnel attended the exercise which is almost twice the amount that was in attendance last year.
Some have attributed the United States increase numbers as a response to Chinas growing presence in the region.
The Cobra Gold military exercises have been happening now for more than 30 years and this year there will be 11,075 personnel from 29 nations in attendance.
The United States has been urging for a return to democracy in Thailand which is their oldest ally in the region.
Previously Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha had promised an election would be held in November of this year, however recently the Junta announced the date of the election might have to be pushed back to February of next year.
