Rayong’s U-tapao Airport is the scene for sky wars as Thai Lion Air (TLA) and Thai Air Asia battle (TAA) for domination at Ban Chang district airport, with the former set to move into the arena soon.
With Bangkok’s two International airports operating above capacity, the Rayong terminal has the opportunity to expand and as such is attracting business from the likes of TLA.
U-tapao is a joint venture between the military and the private sector and seeks to expand on its passenger services.
TAA, which are a low cost airline, have been operating out of Rayong since 2015.
U-tapao has been operational for over fifty years, beginning life as a base for the Americans during the Vietnam war. Legendary actor Bob Hope was a regular visitor, bringing his Christmas show to the base every year from 1964 till 1972.
The airport can now boast over 700,000 passengers per annum but hopes to expand on this by attracting other airlines.
Destinations at present include Kuala Lumpur, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Mai, Macau and Udon Thani.
It is hoped that in time, U-tapao will secure the status of Thailand’s third largerst airport.
