Tragedy has hit the sport in Thailand after Italian boxer Christian Daghio passed away after being knocked out in a title fight. Daghio was 49 years old.
The incident occurred on October 26 as Daghio suffered a bad knockout at the hands of Don Pareuang in the 12th round of their fight. They were competing for the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver light heavyweight title on a card at the Rangsit International Stadium in Rangsit, Thailand.
The bout was described to be a brutal one with Daghio getting punched hard in the head numerous times in the fight, especially in the 12th round. Daghio was knocked down in the 12th round, but eventually got back up. Daghio would then get hit in the head some more, forcing the referee to step in to stop the fight to protect Daghio, who was ahead on two of the three scorecards at the time of the stoppage.
When medical personnel entered the ring, Daghio was unconscious and sent to a hospital, where he was reported to have spent his last few days in a coma after suffering severe brain damage.
Daghio was born in Carpi, Moderna, Emilia Romagna in Italy on April 4, 1969. Before becoming a professional boxer, Daghio was a Muay Thai and MMA fighter, competing in well over 100 fights total between the two sports. According to Boxrec, Daghio made his pro boxing debut in 2015 and was 10-0 as a boxer when he faced Pareuang.
As a pro boxer, Daghio won the PABA, Asian Boxing Federation and WBC International light heavyweight titles.
