A Buddhist monk has been defrocked and removed from the order after it came to light he was stealing ladies underwear.
Phra Theeraphop a monk from a temple in U-Thong in Suphanburi was caught on CCTV taking ladies underwear from behind a gold shop close to a local market in the centre of town.
CCTV footage shows the monk dressed in traditional garb carefully scout the area before stealing several items from a cloths rack and making his exit.
The owner of the gold shop said that his wife and daughter had put their washing out to dry on the morning of February 1 but when they returned to collect it they noticed that 6 items were missing.
After checking their CCTV cameras they realised what had occurred and registered an official complaint with the police, they said they didn’t want to make a big deal out of the matter but felt other people needed to be warned.
It was confirmed by police Colonel Phuwadit Khongpet that the monk seen it the footage was a practicing monk.
Police went to the local temple where the abbot informed them that he had seen what had happened online and banished the monk in question after defrocking him for disgracing the religion and his temple.
The abbot told officers that the monk was taking medication for a mental condition but had recently stopped taking his medication which may have led to him stealing the undergarments.
Police are still searching for the disgraced former monk to charge him with theft during the hours of daylight.
