Real Madrid’s Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo could be about to be dragged through the Spanish courts on charges of defrauding the authorities of almost 15 million euros in tax.
The Prosecutor’s Office in Madrid says it has filed a lawsuit against the Portuguese player.
Ronaldo is accused of tax evasion between 2011 and 2014.
However, the player denied all charges, saying he has nothing to hide.
The charges relate to offshore accounts, using a “business structure” to conceal revenue earned from image rights.
Ronaldo is the world’s highest paid sportsperson, with earnings of over 818 million euros last year alone.
Ronaldo could follow Lionel Messi, who was given a 21 month suspended sentence for tax evasion earlier in the year and was fined 1.9 million euros.
