A Chinese tourist was arrested by officers in Bangkok after he has overstayed his visa and for allegedly throwing bricks from an overpass that hit two vehicles below.
Liu Zhihong, 50, was taken into custody after a warrant was issued by Taling Chan court on August 28 calling for his arrest.
Liu was questioned by Pol Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn on Wednesday morning.
Lt-General Saint spoke to reporters telling them Liu had owned up to hurling four bricks from an overpass near the Pin Klao Bridge at around 5pm on August 17, two of which hit vehicles below.
Liu was arrested later that day and agreed to pay 5,000 baht compensation to the driver of a car whose windshield had been broken by one of the bricks.
A second victim filed a complaint on August 18 asking for 20,000 baht to repair the damage to his pickup truck caused by the incident but Liu refused saying he didn’t have the money to pay for the repairs.
Officers released the Chinese tourist on bail but he disappeared before being re-arrested by members of the Lumpini police department.
Via the use of an interpreter Liu told officers that voices in his head had told him to hurl the bricks at the cars.
Officers will now send Liu to see a psychiatrist before continuing with their investigation.
