Thailand took the gold medal for the 16th time in the men’s football at the SEA Games after a 1-0 win over the hosts Malaysia on Tuesday.
Both side had plenty of scoring chances during the heated first 30 minutes of action but the deadlock was broken in the 39th minute when a mistake from the Malaysian goalkeeper Muhammad Haziq Bin Nadzil saw the ball sail into his own net.
The Malaysian supporters watched on in horror as their keeper attempted to punch the ball clear but instead ended up punching it into his own net.
The game finished 1-0 and Thailand took home the gold medal for the event.
It’s safe to say the Thai team would have been motivated to win the match as 15 million baht is being awarded to the team for their achievement, funds coming from the government and private sectors.
Malaysia will be the overall winners of the Sea games having amassed more than 140 golds during the mini-Olympics however the football gold medal is considered by many to be the most significant event.
Thailand will finish the Sea Games in Second position with Vietnam in third place.
