The Royal Thai Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) has confirmed that the object found off of Naiyang Beach in Phuket is an old bomb which they assume dates back to before World War II.
The team arrived at Phuket beach on Wednesday lead by Vice Admiral Thanakrit Jamjit after reports that an object resembling a torpedo was spotted 30 meters or so from the beach.
The object was reportedly metallic and approximately 1.5 metres long with a diameter of 150cm.
The EOD team carefully dug out the object and in doing so discovered that it had a small wing on one end and in the middle there appeared to be a re-fuelling point and a hook.
The Vice admiral said at this point they are not sure if the object was an aerial bomb or a marine torpedo, but noted that it was not a weapon from the Thai army so at present the theory was it was discarded here before the Second World War.
He said it didn’t matter what type of explosive it was it still poses a danger to anyone nearby and will now be taken away be his team and destroyed.
