Early risers here in Pattaya might have noticed an unusual sight on the streets last Sunday morning after one mahout decided to take his elephant for a walk around the city charging people to feed it sugar cane.
A video of the strange site was posted online having been filmed at around 8am.
According to reports the mahout was charging passers by 10 baht to feed the young male elephant believed to be two or three years old.
It didn’t take long however for someone to urge the young man to take his elephant home pointing out that it is actually illegal to take an elephant onto public roads here in Thailand.
A witness to the whole event Ao Wattana said “I was worried the elephant could be dangerous and I don’t think it’s healthy for it to walk on the hard roads.”
Luckily for the mahout he was not caught by the authorities because walking an elephant on public roads is punishable with a six-months stay in prison and or a fine of up to 10,000 baht.
Did you happen to see the young elephant out on its travels over the weekend?
