High levels of floodwater continue to punish the popular tourist destination of koh Lipe in Satun province leading officials to declare the area a flood disaster zone
The district chief Suwan Chuaynukul signed the order to declare the resort island a disaster zone on Monday.
Officials have been sent to the area to gather information for an urgent report for the prime minister.
Authorities have blamed the severity of the flooding on construction of resorts and hotels on the small island that is only 3 kilometres in length, stating that they had blocked natural waterways.
Suwan said heavy rains continue to buffet the island causing the floodwater to remain high.
The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office have prepared 500 food parcels which contain other necessities ready to hand out to those affected by the flooding.
It is estimated that some 1,000 residents are now without drinking water which they normally source from underground wells that are now unusable because of the flooding.
